Turf disease has become a major problem in many lawns across Tidewater. During the summer months, even the most cared-for lawns are susceptible to lawn disease. Warm, humid weather (humidity over 75% and nighttime temperatures greater than 70 degrees) provides optimal conditions for lawn
Brown Patch disease is a commom and widespread fungus that , like dolar spot, can infect a variety of common turf grass. Brown patch thrives when hot weather and high humidity settle in during the summer months. Tidewaters muggy summer climate is conducive to the development of Brown Patch disease, couple that with over wateringor, watering past noon or every day and a brown patch outbreak is inev
The disease is most apparent during the spring and fall, when warm season turfgrasses are entering or exiting their period of winter dormancy. Circular patches of affected turf are easily observed, ranging in diameter from 3 feet to 26 feet (Figure 1). Leaves of recently infected turf, located at the periphery of the patch, may appear bright yellow and/or orange in color (Figure 2). Patches may be
The fungus primarily infects leaf blades but may also infest stems and spikes. The infection produces gray or dirty-yellow spots with brown or purple borders. A water-soaked border will be seen during high moisture periods around actively growing spots. The general area around some spots may turn chlorotic (yellow), or much of the leaf blade may have a yellow cast.
Pythium blight causes the worst damage to turf in persistently hot and humid weather. It’s most deadly when the relative humidity remains above 90% for more than 14 hours, daytime temperatures stay above 85° F, and nighttime temperatures never fall below 68° F. In these conditions, infected grass will quickly brown, wilt, dry out, and die

Spring dead spot symptoms appear in circular patches from 6 inches to several feet in diameter that remain dormant as the turf greens up in the spring. These patches eventually die and collapse to the soil surface. The roots, stolons, and rhizomes are dark and rotten in affected areas. Spring dead spot patches recur in the same spot each
